Green card for 16 years in US who has paid taxes and contributed to the social security pool. If he leaves US for good and goes back to his country. What happened to his deductions lying with the US Government ? How can he draw or claim his 'deductions' ?
What happens to the social security account of the person who surrenders his greencard and leaves US?
The Social Security account assigned to you will be yours for life. The number is yours alone and will never be transferred or given to someone else. Your social security number is synonymous to your name. It is your identity or your social DNA.
Once you leave the US, you will forfeit all the benefits even if you are retired and already eligible to draw money from your social security. There is a big difference between a green card holder and a US citizen. A US Citizen will be eligible to all the benefits entitled to those born here. You might want to advance to the next level, acquire your citizenship first.
Are you sure going home and surrendering your green card is what you really want to do? If you would like to enjoy the benefits you have contributed to and worked hard for and if money will be an issue with you when you will be in your advanced age and no longer working, you might need to rethink your decision. Good luck!
Reply:What is your country of origin? Check whether your country has a treaty regarding payment of retirement benefits -- quite a few countries with Social Security-type of retirement systems have these treaties.
When it comes time for you to retire under your country's laws, your retirement benefits will be paid in part by your contributions made in your country, and in part by your contributions to Social Security. Your country and the US have the payment arrangements made under the treaty. You might not see separate checks or separate accounting of the sources of your monthly check, but your Social Security contribs will be accounted for and included in your check. Your country's system and Social Security will work together to handle it all for you.
Reply:Depends on the country of origin. If the country has a relevant treaty with the US (most do) the person can apply for and receive social security benefits in the normal way on retirement age. If not, the money is forfieted
Reply:Not sure but I don't think SS benefits should be sent out of the country. That is another reason this country is in such bad shape financially. Have you seen the long lines in the currency exchanges. all the illegals send money to Mexico.
Reply:If here legally, the account goes with him. If he accurss 15 quarters, he is eligible to draw SS. Americans have to pull 40 quarters.
Reply:The same thing that happens to accounts of people who pass away and never claim benefits.
Reply:You don't get anything back. You pay in, scavengers take it.
Reply:Same thing that will happen to all of us - it is bankrupt!
