What is the best way to identify an account that shows up unknown on your your credit report?

How can I take care of an account that is hurting my credit score if my credit report dosent indicate what account it is?

Usually there is a telephone number given for the reporting company. Call the number shown and inquire as to what type of company this is and perhaps this will jog your memory. You can also look at other accounts with the same balance as the one in question and see that it may have been turned over to a collection agency. It could also mean that you were a authorized user of that account only and not the borrower.
Reply:Contact the credit bureau.

Send them a certified letter disputing the entry. By law, they must contact the creditor who listed it and verify the debt. If they can't contact them, then obviously they can't verify the debt and it must be deleted.

If they do have contact info, they will supply you with this info in the letter stating the outcome of their investigation.

You can call them up also, but please take the time to send the letter to document that you contacted them. In the event you have problems getting this removed, you will need proof of contact before pursuing any legal remedies.
